What is ALS?
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive neuromuscular disease that affects the nerves in the brain and spinal cord cells that control body movement. The gradual loss of these cells leads to weakness and difficulties with body movement.
The ALS Clinical Research team at the University of Alberta is led by Dr. Wendy Johnston.
Dr. Wendy Johnston
Dr. Johnston is a medical doctor and professor in the Division of Neurology in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta. She is the Medical Director of the Kaye Edmonton ALS clinic in Edmonton, Alberta.
What do we do?
Dr. Wendy Johnston's ALS Research Unit is an interdisciplinary team dedicated to the care of patients with ALS. The objective of our research program is to improve the understanding of ALS and to evaluate new treatments.
Our Investigational Drug Trials Team conducts clinical research drug trials to help find treatments and a cure for ALS.
The Communications Research Team is dedicated to gathering research information about communication with ALS patients and their families.
