What are accommodations and IEPs?

An Individual Education Plan (IEP) is developed each year by the school in consultation the students and parents/ guardians. It describes the child’s strengths, needs, and interests. It also details accommodations, possible modified learning expectations, and learning objectives to help your child succeed in school. The IEP is a working document that can be changed and updated throughout the year.

Accommodations provide a means for students to overcome barriers that interfere with their ability to demonstrate their knowledge. For example, the use of extra time on a test does not change what understanding they demonstrate, just how long they have to complete the test. Extra time benefits almost all students with learning barriers, but especially students with challenges involving attention, language processing, or anxiety.
