Abolish China’s system of
colonial boarding schools in Tibet

“We applaud the 21 UN Member States who spoke out for Tibet today, and especially Austria, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands and the United States for recommending China abolish the coercive colonial boarding school system intended to forcibly assimilate Tibetan children. China thinks it can get away with atrocity crimes, including holding one million Tibetan children in a coercive residential school system designed to stamp out their identity, but today’s UN review shows governments are willing to hold Beijing accountable.”

Tibet Action Director

Tibetans in exile are on the frontline of targeted cyber attacks

Like the alarming attempt discovered by our digital security team to infect Tibetans’ phones with malware. Attackers pretending to be journalists, Amnesty International staff, NGO volunteers, and tourists to India started conversations via WhatsApp with Tibet movement leaders, trying, again and again, to get them to click on links with malicious software. Just one click would have given the attackers full access to their target’s mobile phone.

Tibet Will Not Be Erased

By raising the alarm on China’s mass removal of 1 million Tibetan children from their homes and families, together we have put Tibet back in the headlines and Beijing on the back foot.

In the past year alone, three key UN bodies and six States have spoken out publicly against China’s colonial boarding schools in Tibet, and 12 major media outlets have written stories on this issue.

This is groundbreaking work: China’s information blackout and lockdown of Tibet, together with its global bullying tactics, had all but erased coverage of the Sino-Tibet conflict in the media and on the world stage.

Together we’ve put China’s repressive policies in Tibet back under serious scrutiny and Beijing is feeling the heat.

In the coming year, we will do everything in our power to build on this momentum to abolish China’s colonial boarding school system in Tibet.
