In the kaleidoscope of Toronto's artistic landscape, Yaw Tony emerges as a polymathic maestro, conducting narratives as a curator, artist, and designer. His formal education spans Architecture, Graphic Design, and Fine Art, creating a multi-dimensional palette of talents that extends to product design and creative consultancy. Tony, a laureate in his own right, proudly bears accolades such as the CAFA Award 2023, Best of Craft & Design Award at TOAF 2023, Black Designers of Canada Award of Excellence 2021, DesignTO Award 2021 & 2019, among other esteemed honours.
A wanderlust-driven virtuoso, Tony's artworks and installations have graced exhibitions across the globe, from the Vitra Design Museum in Germany to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain, and the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona. His creations have made a lasting impression in renowned publications such as Fashion Magazine, "Making Africa: A Continent of Contemporary Design" (2015), earning him a coveted cover feature in Designlines 2018 and Studio 2021. As the visionary behind LLiM (www.lifeliveth.com), Tony delves into textile and visual communication art projects, showcasing a discerning artistic eye.
At the heart of Tony's artistic ethos lies a profound exploration of value and the emotive power of COLours (Collection of Ourselves), serving as symbols and conversation catalysts. These hues, intertwined with humanity, become conduits shaping behaviour and influencing the emotional resonance of spaces. His aesthetic journey extends an invitation to dive into myriad narratives, each a unique form of storytelling that celebrates the beauty of existence.
Yet, Tony's artistic voyage transcends the visual realm, delving into the existential. His work grapples with fundamental questions echoing in the corridors of human consciousness: Who am I? Where am I from? Why am I here? What can I do? Where am I going? These inquiries form the crucible of human motivation, propelling actions and shaping destinies. Tony believes in the intrinsic equality of all human beings and their shared pursuit of purpose, meaning, and utopia. His works serve as more than mere creations; they are guiding lights leading individuals towards their truest selves, away from societal facades that often obscure our deepest essence. In a world where many may perish without realizing their leadership potential, Yaw Tony's art stands as a testament to the transformative power of self-discovery and authenticity.
When crafting art for public spaces, he endeavours to infuse these commissions with similar depth, infusing beauty and masterful craftsmanship into specific environments. His creative process responds to the surrounding architecture, ecosystem, and community, compellingly meeting the needs of the site.
