Humber River Hospital takes over North York long term care home due to coronavirus

The Ontario government says Humber River Hospital will be taking over management of the Villa Colombo long term care home due to an ongoing coronavirus outbreak at the facility.

“Despite receiving support and advice from Humber River Hospital for weeks, Villa Colombo has been unable to contain the spread of COVID-19,” the province said in a news release Friday. “Humber River Hospital will now manage care in the home along with the team at Villa Colombo and fill the executive director role on a temporary basis.”

There have been 29 coronavirus-related deaths, the home said in a  post on their website on Wednesday. There are currently 17 active cases of the disease at the facility and three people are in the hospital. The home said six staff members have contracted the disease as well.

The facility, located at 40 Playfair Street in North York, is a private home that mostly caters to residents of Italian heritage.  It’s run by Villa Charities, Inc.

“The Ministry of Long-Term Care will continue to make decisions on which long-term care homes may require additional management support on a case-by-case basis,” the province said.
