Toronto Raptors named most valuable Canadian franchise

When you think of Toronto’s sports teams, many would name the Maple Leafs or Blue Jays before the Raptors.

But perhaps it’s the Raptors’ 2019 championship victory that gave the team the edge in a ranking of Canada’s highest valued sports franchises.

The team at Sportsbet compiled data from Forbes and Transfermarkt on franchises in the NHL, MLB, NBA and MLS, looked at the teams’ year-on-year growth and change in value over the last decade (2012 to 2021), and found the Raptors took the top spot.

Not only are the Raptors worth a reported $2.2 billion, but Canada’s only NBA team also saw their value grow more than 400% since 2012 when the team’s estimated worth was $400 million.

On the flip side, the Leafs came in second place. Despite having the longest Stanley Cup drought in the league — 54 seasons — the Buds continue to enjoy financial success.

The Leafs are worth $1.8 billion, 80% growth from $1 billion in 2012.

In third place are the Blue Jays with a value of $1.7 billion, a 311.62% increase from $413 million in 2012.

NHL teams eat up the next six spots, as the Montreal Canadiens, Edmonton Oilers, Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames, Winnipeg Jets and Ottawa Senators make the cut.

Toronto FC came in 10th, edging out other MLS teams, CF Montreal and the Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

The Reds saw a 183.06% growth since 2012 as their value jumped from $16.2 million to $45.9 million.
