Welcome!

We are migrating to a new website – check-us out in our new on-line location. And please bear with us as we make this transition as not all programs have been moved. Thanks!

Flying Squirrel Adventures is a program of the Blomidon Naturalists Society. We initiate and facilitate immersive nature outings, activities and event series for people of all ages in the Annapolis Valley. We help people connect to the natural world, themselves, and a community of nature lovers. The Flying Squirrel is a symbol of being curious and having fun in nature!  Also, the flying squirrel is active all through the year, and is very social, hanging out in groups. Just like us!

Flying Squirrel Adventures programs take place in Mi’kma’ki, the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People. This territory is covered by the “Treaties of Peace and Friendship” which did not deal with the surrender of lands and resources but in fact recognized Mi’kmaw title.

We recognize that outdoor play and learning would not be possible without access to the natural world that has been tended since time immemorial by the many Indigenous peoples of this land. We acknowledge that we have a responsibility to honour and learn about their histories and current cultures and to actively work in support of reconciliation. We are committed to these things and to fostering respectful and sustainable relationships with the Indigenous Peoples of this land, with non-human beings, with the land and with the water.  We are on a steep learning curve and step into this work with humility, openness and gratitude for all that we learn and have already learned. In reflecting on our shared responsibilities to this land we encourage you to learn and engage with some of the current Indigenous issues which also take place on unceded Mi’kmaw territory.

Our Offering

We offer a variety of events, event series and programs in person around the Annapolis Valley.  For our first two years the Kentville Ravine was our home base but we have expanded into new areas as interest in our work grows.  We have replaced our standing monthly sessions with a wide variety of events and initiatives for a variety of ages.  Our programs are open all (age-dependent in some cases) and we are actively working to address barriers to participation, including transportation support and in some cases offering food during program time. We understand that there are many other barriers too and we are working to understand these and help overcome those we can influence so that nature time is available to all who desire it and need it.

Please check out the Programs tab to learn about the offerings we have for particular groups and the Upcoming events tab to see options that are open to the public (by registration in most cases).
