ALLARD, Peter Andrew
1946 - 2022

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of our beloved brother, uncle, great uncle and friend Peter Andrew Allard on June 11, 2022 in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Peter was a lawyer, benefactor, passionate advocate, news buff and world traveler.

Son of Dr. Charles Alexander Allard (Edmonton) and Effie (Bettie) Cameron Dallamore (Vancouver), Peter was born in Boston 15 minutes after his twin brother Charles (Chuck) Richard Allard on October 29, 1946 at the Boston Lying-In Hospital. Peter was the fourth of six siblings, including Cam, Judy, Chuck, Cathy and Tony.

Peter grew up in Vancouver and attended Queen Elizabeth Elementary School and Lord Byng Secondary School in Point Grey. He received an undergraduate degree in Arts with a major in History from UBC in 1968. He graduated from UBC Law with an LL.B degree in 1971 and went on to later name the UBC Law School in 2015 with the largest gift ever to a Canadian law school. Peter articled and practiced for the Law Firm of Barbeau, McKercher, Collingwood and Hanna. In 1976, he formed Allard & Company where he specialized in property law.

In 1993, Peter established the Highbury Foundation, which has supported educational institutes, universities and countless charities including the Emily Carr University of Art, Vancouver Aquarium, St. Paul's Hospital Foundation, Brentwood College School, several YMCAs, the BC Women's Hospital, the University of Alberta Diabetic Chair, the Pilgrims Hospice Society as well as biomedical and clinical research for cancer, diabetes, Hepatitis B and C and HIV/AIDS. He also personally funded the Graeme Hall Wildlife Sanctuary in Barbados. In 2012, he established the Allard Prize for International Integrity.

Peter was an original. He had a keen interest in history and traced the Allard family genealogy back to the 1600s in France. He was proud of his mixed French Canadian and Scottish ancestry. Like his mother, Peter loved to travel and went on many special trips around the world that included close friends, nieces and nephews. Peter had an appreciation for architecture and simple, clean design. He was an avid art collector and created beautiful homes that he so generously shared with family and friends.

Peter was an independent thinker, a doer and a realist. He was an advocate of free speech and justice, and a supporter of gay rights and equality. He championed the underdog and fought uphill battles on points of principle, even when he knew the cards were stacked against him.

Peter's generosity reached far and wide. He taught by example and his giving nature not only extended to his many nieces and nephews, but also to the cities and places he lived. He was loyal and took great care of his mother over the years. His family always knew they could count on him. He had friends from all over the world who will miss his contagious laugh, giving heart and quick-witted sense of humour - all a true testament to a life well lived and a person well loved.

Peter was predeceased by his father Charles Alexander Allard, his mother Bettie Cameron Dallamore, his aunt Lucie Messum and many uncles, aunts and cousins. His legacy will carry on through his charitable contributions and his family and friends, who deeply mourn his loss.

He leaves behind his twin brother Chuck Allard (Kjeryn), brothers Cam Allard (Dawn) and Tony Allard, sisters Judy Allard (Harry) and Cathy Allard-Roozen, brother-in-law Harold Roozen and sister-in-law Kim Allard; his cousins Lucie Hanson, James McLean and Patricia McLean; his nieces and nephews Robert King (Lisa), Beth Allard-Clough (Brad), Nicole Prokop (Al), Wendy King (Casey), Paul Allard, Michelle Bessette (Robert), Jennifer Allard (Chad), Jamie Allard (Ellen), Julia Allard (William), Jillian Katerenchuk (Jason), Gage Allard and Luke Allard; and his 24 great nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his personal assistant, Ruben Ibarra, and his faithful friend and assistant of 47 years, Dennie Flynn.

A celebration will be held in honour of Peter in late August with close family and friends. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to a charity that is close to your heart.

Plant a tree: How does it work

When your purchase is complete, a post will be made on the tribute wall of the deceased signifying the planting of a memorial tree.

An official certificate recognizing your purchase will be included with your email receipt. You can then forward the email to the family or print it and give it to them personally.

After an order is placed, our forestry partners will plant the tree in the area of greatest need (nearest the funeral home), according to the planting schedule for the year.

Due to seasonal conditions, the tree planting takes place during the spring and summer.
