Mastering Excellence: Vara Unik's Methodology

Mastering excellence requires a blend of expertise and innovation. As both an on-ice skills and power skating coach, I bring a unique perspective to off-ice training. At Vara Unik, I infuse this expertise into meticulously crafted programs rooted in cutting-edge research. This methodology encompasses six key pillars, meticulously designed to optimize your performance both on and off the ice.

Scientific Testing

I’ve performed testing with the Montreal Canadiens and dozens of other teams/organizations over the years. Applying these same procedures will provide both athletes and myself with a greater understanding of the strengths, weaknesses and overall direction of their program. Testing will be scheduled periodically through the offseason to monitor athletes progress.

Hockey Specific Strength & Power

Following my hockey specific resistance training program will help you develop pure strength and power. We devote over 50% of your training on corrective strength training and explosive movement patterns. A lot of this training is working on unilateral exercises and ensuring that you are bullet proof from injuries.

Anaerobic Conditioning & Fatigue Tolerance

Arguably the toughest work athletes will go through is improving their cardiovascular conditioning and ability to tolerate fatigue. You’ll be pushed hard training on the bikes, outdoor and indoor track, running stairs, pushing sleds, and treadmill sprints. Ultimately this is the wok that will help you outlast your opponent when it matters the most.

Speed Training

The science behind increasing an athlete’s speed is very complex and achieved through my specialized training methodologies. Athletes will work on hockey specific speed 2-3x per week utilizing self propelled curve treadmills, speed sets on the stairs, and track work (both indoor and outdoor). Agility training is also a component of acceleration training that we will work on regularly to produce multidirectional explosive movements.

Flexibility and Recovery

All programs will start with a few weeks dedicated to “tissue remodeling,” which is engineered through a detailed understanding of  hockey biomechanics. The goal is to restore tissue imbalances all athletes experience from the rigorous demands of the hockey season. This tedious but critical work will continue to be measured and incorporated throughout the offseason as we dedicate time to flexibility and recovery training multiple times each week.

Velocity Technology for Measuring Power & Speed

Technology has advanced substantially with sport performance training, but only has value if it can be correctly applied to individualized programming. Using velocity devices I will regularly measure athletes ability to produce power to ensure improvements are following and athletes trajectory. This gold standard for monitoring athletes production of power is essential for all of the strength and explosive speed required in hockey.
