VIU Mariners volleyball teams medal at nationals

Women win silver, men win bronze at CCAA championships

Vancouver Island University’s volleyball players all finished their seasons with medals at nationals.

The VIU Mariners women’s volleyball team earned silver and the men’s team earned bronze at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association championships held this past weekend, March 7-9.

The M’s women competed in Red Deer, Alta., and made it to the national final against the Lakeland Rustlers before falling in straight sets, 25-21, 25-17, 25-10. Aimee Skinner had 11 kills in the match and was chosen a first-team all-star along with all-Canadian setter Linnea Brickwood. Megan Duffy was chosen a second-team all-star.

VIU’s men’s team competed closer to home at the Pacific Institute for Sport Education in Victoria. They defeated the Humber Hawks three sets to one in the bronze-medal match with game scores of 25-22, 25-19, 17-25, 25-15. Lucas Torres led VIU with 21 kills in the match, Daniel Mascarenhas had 11 and Max McDonald made five blocks. Mascarenhas was chosen a first-team all-star and Jake Stobbe and Torres were second-team all-stars. The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology won the CCAA championship, defeating the Titans de Limoilou.
