September 30 – National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Join us for a day of reflection, learning, and honoring

Wanuskewin is honoring the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

This September 30th, we welcome you to be present and learn about the lasting Residential School Legacy, and how we move forward in harmony.

• We will be opening space for Truth, as you cannot move to understanding and Reconciliation without people’s truths being told and heard.
• And space for honoring indigenous cultures being alive, shared, and passed down for generations, being together in the spirit of reconciliation.

Admission will be BY DONATION

Location: Wanuskewin Heritage Park

Time: 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

• 10:00 a.m. – Site Open
• 10:10 a.m. – Opening Prayer and Honour Song
• 10:30 a.m. – Words of Reflection and Storytelling with Maria Linklater (*Discussions related to Residential Schools, trauma, systems, and personal experiences.)
  • ALSO open through the day for DROP IN:
    • Traditional Games with Lamarr Oksasikewiyin
    • Hide Teachings with Elissa Brown
    • Birch Bark Basket making and stories with Lyndon Linklater
    • Indigenous Artisan Market (10:30-4)
    • Library, and stories, in our new early years area in the Sacred Land Exhibit
• 11:00 a.m. – Traditional powwow style dance presentation and stories (Traditional, Fancy, Jingle, Drum) with Darrell Paskimin
• 11:05 a.m. – Language Reclamation with Cree Autumn Sunrise Longjohn
• 12:00 p.m. – Fiddle Presentation with Jordan Daniels
• 12:05 p.m. – Tipi Teachings
• 1:00 p.m. – Keynote Speaker Louise Bernice Halfe – “Speaking from the Heart”
• 2:15 p.m. – Ladies Traditional, Old Style Jingle, tiny tot, and Prairie Chicken Powwow Dance presentation and stories – Kimowan Ahenakew, Jessica Rabbitskin and family 
• 3:30 p.m. –  Round Dance to end the day
• 4:00 p.m. – ALL ACTIVITIES & PRESENTATIONS END

Self reflection time available on-site with our exhibits, art galleries, playground, and self guided walks on any of the 7km of trails.

What is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation?

The day honours the lost children and Survivors of residential schools, their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.
