No mystery behind surgical wait times

A way of reducing unnecessary variation and long wait times is to use single entry models, where patients are seen by the next available surgeon.

Why wait times exist is not a mystery. Surgery is no different than any other service industry. The waiting time for a service depends on supply, demand, and how efficiently the supply is matched to the demand.

Right now, the supply of surgical services is insufficient to meet the demand in a timely manner, and the haphazard manner by which supply is matched to demand has unnecessarily made long wait times even longer.
