Grey County and the Bluewater School Board are looking at offering an agriculture program for students at Grey Roots Museum’s Moreston Village.
A staff report to councillors Thursday, June 22nd says the school board has proposed a collaboration with Grey Roots to offer the Specialist High Skills Major program in Agriculture at a temporary new location, making it more accessible to students since Owen Sound is a hub for the bus system.
Staff say the program exposes students horticulture, crop science, animal science and livestock production.
The proposal for the program would use the lower level of the barn for animal husbandry and the schoolhouse for classroom space. It would also involve building a permanent three-season hoop greenhouse.
A maple syrup shack would be moved and a storage shed would be placed at the Regional Agriculture Learning and Demonstration Site next door to Grey Roots.
Back in March of 2021, the Agricultural Advisory Committee asked staff to look into the feasibility of the hosting the program at Grey Roots. Now, staff are working on a draft agreement for a pilot partnership from February to June 2024.
The staff report says, if the pilot is approved and successful, the intent is to develop a long-term partnership.
