City of Burnaby endorses Burnaby Mountain Gondola project

Last updated: January 28, 2022

Burnaby City Council has endorsed the Route 1 option for TransLink’s Burnaby Mountain Gondola project, citing the direct benefits for Burnaby residents and the low environmental impact of the project.

With the endorsement of Burnaby City Council, the Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation will now consider the project for inclusion in the Mayors’ Council new 10-Year Vision, which will guide TransLink's priorities and investments for the next decade.

“The Burnaby Mountain Gondola project will create a safe and reliable transit option for Burnaby residents travelling to and from Burnaby Mountain. By taking cars and buses off the road it will be one of the many changes we must make in our city to achieve the aggressive targets we’ve set for reducing carbon emissions,” said Mayor Mike Hurley. “Before endorsing this project, council stressed the importance of consultation with residents, businesses and First Nations, and we expect that dialogue to continue should this project move forward.”

The Route 1 option is a direct route from the Production Way-University SkyTrain station to UniverCity and SFU. TransLink’s concept designs for Route 1 anticipate only five towers along the entire route, with no towers in the Forest Grove neighbourhood.

The proposed Burnaby Mountain Gondola aligns with Connecting Burnaby, the City’s recently adopted Transportation Plan, and supports the City’s major targets of mode shift, reduced emissions, and improved safety.

According to TransLink, gondolas offer increased capacity, shorter travel times, more frequent departures, better customer experience, greater winter reliability (particularly important for people with mobility challenges), and reduced noise and emissions when compared with buses.
