Minister Monsef chairs committee that brings together community leaders committed to gender equality in Canada

March 4, 2019 - Toronto, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

Canada is taking concrete actions to advance gender equality and empower women and girls both at home and around the world. As host of the Women Deliver 2019 Conference to be held in Vancouver, British Columbia, from June 3 to 6, 2019, Canada will be engaging its citizens and global partners on how to make gender equality a reality for everyone, everywhere.

To that end, today, the Honourable Maryam Monsef, Minister of International Development and Minister for Women and Gender Equality, launched a national committee comprising 16 leaders committed to gender equality.

The members of the committee—who come from a variety of sectors, including the media, sports, business, academics, civil society, and the arts — bring diverse perspectives on gender equality from across Canada. They include Simone Cavanaugh, Léa Clermont-Dion, Caroline Codsi, Charmaine Crooks, Genesa M. Greening, Cassandra Hallett, Helen Kennedy, Beth Lyons, Kevin McCort, Emily Mills, Heather Moyse, Shania Pruden, Paulette Senior, Catherine Tait, Vianne Timmons and Adina Williams.

The role of the committee is to increase awareness and encourage discussions on gender equality, diversity and inclusion by taking part in activities and engaging with Canadians from coast to coast to coast.

In their first meeting today, the members of the committee were joined by Katja Iversen, President and CEO of Women Deliver, and members of Women Deliver 2019 Mobilization Canada, a network of organizations working across the country to advocate for gender equality.

Quotes

“The Women Deliver 2019 Conference will be the largest gathering of gender equality advocates and activists in the world. But it is more than just a conference, it is a global movement that inspires us to take action and make our voices heard.

“When we advance gender equality, we grow the middle class, strengthen the economy, and everyone benefits. In the lead up to Women Deliver, I look forward to working with the national committee and mobilizers from across the country to engage Canadians on how we can all work together to improve the lives of women and girls at home and around the world.”

- The Hon. Maryam Monsef, Minister of International Development and Minister for Women and Gender Equality
