Hospital spending

September 21, 2023 — Who is taking care of you in Canada’s hospitals? What are hospitals spending on and how does Canada compare internationally? Take an in-depth look at hospital expenditures, including a breakdown of the share of hours worked by staff in acute inpatient units, emergency services and long-term care units in hospitals.

Use the data tables and visualizations to explore trends and information on hospital spending by type of expense and by service area at the provincial, territorial and international levels. You can also see the share of hours worked by different providers in selected clinical areas.

Note: The hospital spending trends in this release reflect the most recent information available in the Canadian MIS Database (CMDB) from the 2021–2022 data cycle (which ended March 2022).
