The National Trauma Registry (NTR) was closed on March 31, 2014.
The NTR currently tracks statistics on injuries in Canada. Injuries are a significant public health problem and are the leading cause of death in Canada for those age 1 to 44.
Injury data from the NTR Minimum Data Set (NTR MDS) will continue to be available through the Discharge Abstract Database (DAD) and Hospital Morbidity Database (HMDB). You can access data, including the historical NTR Comprehensive Data Set (NTR CDS), through our data request process.
Decisions to discontinue programs are always difficult and made only after careful consideration. In this case, a number of factors influenced this decision, including
- The changing priorities of our stakeholders
- Limited use of the NTR CDS (PDF) by jurisdictions
- Lack of data timeliness for the NTR CDS
- The availability of the majority of the data elsewhere within CIHI
This change will not affect the Ontario Trauma Registry (OTR), which is operated by CIHI and funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. The OTR will continue to collect and report on injuries in Ontario.

Databases and data sources
We currently manage the National Trauma Registry (NTR) and the Ontario Trauma Registry (OTR). These registries provide data on patients hospitalized or killed as a result of trauma in Canada and Ontario. Their goals are to
- Contribute to the reduction of injuries and related deaths
- Facilitate national and international comparisons of injuries
- Increase awareness of injury as a public health challenge in Canada and support injury-related research
On March 31, 2014, the NTR will close. It currently has two data sets:
- The NTR Minimum Data Set (NTR MDS) includes demographic, diagnostic and procedural information on all admissions to acute care hospitals in Canada because of injury. This data set will continue to be available through the Discharge Abstract Database (DAD) and Hospital Morbidity Database (HMDB) following the NTR closure on March 31, 2014.
- The NTR Comprehensive Data Set (NTR CDS)(PDF) includes demographic, administrative and clinical data on all admissions to specialized trauma centres in participating provinces. As of March 31, 2014, the NTR CDS will no longer be collected by CIHI. Historical NTR CDS data will be available through the data request process.
The OTR provides statistics on injuries in Ontario. The OTR has three data sets:
- The OTR Minimum Data Set (OTR MDS) included demographic, diagnostic and procedural information on all admissions to acute care hospitals in Ontario because of injury.
- The OTR Comprehensive Data Set (CDS) includes demographic, administrative and clinical data on admissions to specialized trauma centres in Ontario.
- The OTR Death Data Set (DDS) contains data on all deaths due to injury. Data includes demographic information, cause of death, injury details, motor vehicle crash information and other factors contributing to death.
The OTR will not be affected by the closure of the NTR.
