WeCloudData prepares you for the next generation of data science challenges and offers everything you need to succeed in career transformation. WeCloudData is a leading data science education and career service provider in Canada. The school is known for serving as a bridge between devoted and passionate data scientists and companies who need help with challenging business problems in data analytics.

Why Study Data Analytics at WeCloudData?

WeCloudData was one of the first bootcamps in Canada to offer advanced training in data science, including applied instruction in machine learning, cloud computing and data engineering. For beginners, WeCloudData offers introductory courses in Excel, SQL and Tableau for as little as $300, making it one of the most affordable options on this list. What’s more, WeCloudData co-founder, Shaohua Zhang, still spends plenty of time in the classroom, where he consistently gets top marks for teaching. Before co-founding WeCloudData, Zhang taught big data at Ryerson University and managed research and development projects at Blackberry.

What Students Are Saying

After listening and comparing big data courses in different places in Toronto, I went to sign up all of the WeCloudData courses right after the Shaohua’s info session without any hesitation. He is not only very much knowledgable and experienced but also teaches so clearly and methodologically, which is way beyond my expectations. I have finished Python and big data courses up far, both courses are well-organized, project-oriented all along. You can start by applying what have learned, exploring your own tools from there, and also building up step by step as you learn more throughout the courses. Whenever I got stuck, I could get all the help I need from the instructor, TA and teammates, sometimes I also got motivated by other teams and pushed forward by my instructor to continue working on my project by doing in-class progress report and presentations. The things I have learned here and the final project presentation I did benefits me a lot by showing so much confidence in my big data interviews and helping me handing job offers. Quite often, I feel I know more than my interviewers! ^ ^ Many thanks to WeCloudData, it is a great learning platform with great instructor, TAs and classmates!!

With career-focused, employer-designed learning experiences and industry-leading instructors, BrainStation is a living laboratory for Toronto’s aspiring tech talent.

What Students Are Saying

This was my first course at Brainstation, I was hesitant at first as it's been almost 15 years since I've gone to "school" for anything. The process from the beginning was pretty seamless, they assign you a Brainstation lead who walks you through everything, from the prep course, how to use their platform called Synapse, all of this is done through Slack which is simple enough to use. Once you have all the prework done, it sets you up for what to expect in this class, how to use SQL and the software Tableau. Our instructors Rohan and Micheal were super transparent with us as a group - We weren't leaving this class with full understanding of SQL, and the various implementations of it.. but a solid foundation and what we need to know to get around SQL commands in the simplest form. This is exactly what I needed. It was a refreshing and fun way to get the basics, with the expectation to do extensive practice at home so we can sharpen our skills. Speaking of Micheal and Rohan, they were a pleasure to learn from. They both have a different background, one more analytical and one more on the data science side, and it was a perfect combination. It was a light environment and the classes seemed to fly by quickly. We had almost 20 students, but they both managed to give us all personal attention when needed - which was a plus. I entered this course to better understand how data works, how to understand data and pull key insights and i left with exactly that. Yes, the course is expensive, but if you actually implement what they're teaching you can learn quite a bit.

General Assembly is a leader in digital skills education and career transformation, delivering dynamic hands-on training in today’s most in-demand data, coding, business and design skills. Its curated and adaptive programs in data analytics and data science, Python, JavaScript development, UX design, product management and digital marketing, are all designed to keep ahead of evolving employer demands. With more than 30 campuses across six countries and 25-plus vibrant online communities, General Assembly delivers accessible and award-winning education to upgrade your skills or transform your career.

Why Study Data Analytics at General Assembly?

While studying data analytics at GA, you’ll receive hands-on instruction from top analysts at market-leading companies such as Capital One and Deloitte. Your teachers deliver innovative and up-to-date content and real-world experience along with valuable industry insights and networking and mentoring opportunities.

What Students Are Saying

Through my experience at General Assembly (note, when I started, it was still Bitmaker, but in effect, the content was General Assembly approved), I was able to land my first data science role. While the industry is hiring Sr. Data Scientist engineers, and Sr. Data Scientists, breaking in is difficult for more entry-level Data Analyst/Scientists. However, I do like how there are Data Scientists who come from a variety of backgrounds, from social sciences, cognitive sciences, to mathematics. On this journey, I’ve had a lot of support from my General Assembly instructor (Max is one of smartest, and also most effective teachers), career coaches and classmates. Note, your mileage may vary based on your instructor, or peers (to drive discussion and helping each other). I was lucky to have one of the best. Our instructor worked at two local start-ups before joining General Assembly, so he had real experience. Additionally, he often presented at conferences like Pycon and abroad. This is the by far the reason why I am rating General Assembly so high, it’s because you gain access to an instructor who can teach the material better than online materials. Anyone can find a Jupyter notebook on Random Forests, or youtube video on Neural Networks, but to get insights from an Engineer who has written production code, and has advice about ‘flex’ topics like why Docker, cloud computing, and a better way of approaching a problem is invaluable. Choose your boot camp based on your instructor. That’s the differentiating piece. Go to an info session, and ask him/her questions.

Overall, the courses helped me develop the skills needed to manage analytics in a corporate environment. The program is recognized by the Project Management Institute (PMI) and it includes three courses: Managing Predictive Analytics & Big Data, Maximizing Value for Predictive Analytics and Big Data, and Advanced Management of Data Analytics. My only feedback for UofT is that there should be a faster way to finish the courses. Ryerson has a fast track program and York is introducing one. I was in the middle of a career transition but had to wait an entire semester for one of the courses to become available. There might be better certificates out there for you if your main goal is learn quickly and apply lessons in a new job.

What Students Are Saying

This program offers a good introduction to statistics, data science, data management, working with large data sets, analytics theory and big data tools. As someone who hasn't coded for 10+ years, I was able to pick it up pretty quickly and complete all of the coding via what was taught in the class or tutorials/lab sessions. The program has exposed us to most of the standard tools: SQL, RegEx, R, Watson, Hive, Pig, Spark, Hadoop, etc.. Also, you get exposure to analytics methodologies (clustering, regression, decision trees, machine learning). The program has been a mix of theory and more practical learning - which helps ensure you really understand the purpose of the tool or method and how to apply it to real-world or business problems. The program has been a great way for me to build up my knowledge and expertise in big data and machine analytics. I am not a full-time technologist, but work with many, and we now have a common language and tool set to problem solve with together. This course would also be a great complementary skill set for someone who is already a technologist or already a data analyst who could then take what they learned and build more depth on it through their professional activities.

MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses)

Online learning platforms like Coursera, edX and Udacity offer access to Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), promising certifications and even degrees. These courses generally consist of pre-recorded videos and online quizzes or exams that can be completed at your own pace — they are flexible, typically low cost, and lean heavily on carefully calibrated Learning Management Systems (LMS’s) designed to break learning into bite-sized chunks and, often, gamify your experience to help keep you motivated.

It’s important to understand, however, what MOOCs are not: they do not offer live instruction, cohort-based learning and interaction with a group of peers, direct and ongoing feedback from professors, or live mentorship, networking opportunities or career support, compared to the benefits of attending an actual coding bootcamp or experiencing life on a college or university campus.

Keep in mind, too, that colleges and universities in Canada are provincially regulated, and each province outlines its own accreditation requirements for certificates, diplomas and degrees. Generally speaking, college certificate programs require the completion of two semesters (or one year) of study as approved by the province’s ministry of post-secondary education. MOOCs offering “professional certificates” are not accredited by provincial education ministries in Canada.

Nevertheless, MOOCs can be a great way to survey new academic territory while you decide if you are indeed ready to pursue comprehensive training at an accredited college or university. Below are some of the most popular platforms for taking that first step toward a data analytics certification in Canada or internationally.

Coursera

Coursera is partnered with more than 275 universities and other organizations to provide students with an affordable online way to learn data analytics and other in-demand skills.

Coursera operates on a “freemium” model. That is, some courses are free, but if you want to earn a certificate, such as a certificate in data analytics, you need to subscribe to Coursera Plus and pay a monthly fee of $79 CAD.

Popular data analytics certifications on Coursera include the IBM Data Analyst Professional Certificate and the Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate.

edX

edX is a MOOC provider created by Harvard and MIT with a freemium model similar to Coursera. It is now partnered with more than 250 post-secondary institutions and private companies.

edX also offers the IBM Data Analyst Professional Certificate, but at a different price tag. While Coursera charges a monthly fee until you complete the certificate, edX charges a one-time fee of $1,030 CAD.

Furthermore, edX is partnered with Canadian universities such as the University of Toronto, University of British Columbia (UBC) and Queen’s University to bring these institutions’ courses to a larger online audience. You can earn a professional certificate from UBC in Excel for Everyone: Data Analysis Fundamentals for $196 CAD, for example.

Udacity

Udacity is another leading American MOOC provider with 16.9 million registered users. Udacity does not offer professional certificates but rather “nanodegrees” developed in-house, sometimes in collaboration with private companies. The nanodegree programs are built around real-world projects and offer project feedback from reviewers.

The Data Analyst nanodegree by Udacity is offered through a “pay as you go” model at $529 USD per month or $1,796 USD for 4-month access. On average, it takes three months to complete the course.
