Jackie Da Ros Memorial Scholarship

Donation protected
Jackie Da Ros was a long-time teacher in School District 59, holding many different roles ranging from her preferred topics of math and science to courses with a social focus, such as home economics and personal planning. Through every teaching position, Jackie worked tirelessly and conscientiously to ensure all students had access to the best education possible. She was an activist in all aspects of her life, and would always fight for what was right and fair. Jackie encouraged her students to put forth their best efforts, and refused to ever allow them to sell themselves short. She believed that each student should have an equal opportunity to achieve their goals, and that, with enough hard work, they could be capable of anything they put their minds to.

Jackie was initially diagnosed with breast cancer in the spring of 2017. Even as she underwent treatment, she strove to actively participate in her care, and engage with the broader cancer patient community. In the spring/summer of 2018, she was officially in remission, and looked forward to returning to a new teaching position in the fall. A sudden diagnosis of an aggressive recurrence of breast cancer in her liver in late September led to her passing on October 20, 2018.

It was Jackie's wish to create a legacy in the form of an annual scholarship for a graduate who shows resilience, rigour, and a dedication to their academics no matter what obstacles they might face. Even if they may not achieve the highest grades in their courses, the successful candidate will be able to say "I always tried my very best, and never gave up", just as Jackie always did.

Donations will also be accepted at the office of the South Peace campus of Dawson Creek Secondary School.
