Provincial Day of Action on Litter
Each year, the second Tuesday of May marks the Provincial Day of Action on Litter, an initiative to raise awareness of the impacts of waste on our environment and encourage everyone to do their part to help keep our environment clean. This year, the Provincial Day of Action on Litter is May 14, 2024.
Ontario has identified the following actions we can take to put litter in its proper place:
- Reduce waste: By reusing items.
- Divert waste: Recycle or compost.
- Prevent waste and litter: Purchase goods with less packaging or using reusable cups.
- Clean up litter.
- Properly dispose of waste: Make sure items are in the garbage bin.
Residents are encouraged to participate and use the form linked here to report their cleanup results.
- Wear gloves while picking up waste.
- Avoid touching your face.
- Immediately wash or sanitize your hands when you’re done collecting waste.
- Supervise children and don’t let children wander off alone.
- Avoid unsafe areas such as railway tracks, creeks, riverbanks and roadways.
- Be careful of wild animals, insects, hives and nests, and noxious weeds such as poison ivy and giant hogweed.
- Do not pick up dangerous items like needles, broken glass, hazardous waste or dead animals
