Return to Athletics Update – Feb. 14, 2022

As we have noted, HWDSB Athletics has been following all recommendations from Hamilton Public Health Services (HPHS) and the Ministry of Education regarding the safe return to sport.

To date, this has involved a pause on high-contact sports and use of masks by all active participants in indoor sport (e.g., while a player is on the volleyball court).

The situation remains fluid. Some sports may be modified due to COVID-19 prevention measures. However, we are fully committed to ensuring a safe return to athletics for all participants, coaches, and volunteers.

Low-Contact Sports

On Feb. 10, 2022, the Ministry lifted the requirement to mask while playing indoor sport. Masks must be worn while on school premises but may be removed for active participation in sport. For example, athletes who are on the court during volleyball may remove their mask and put them back on when returning to the bench.

High-Contact Sports

The pause on high-contact sport has been lifted, allowing the winter season of Basketball, Hockey and Water-polo to resume. HWDSB Athletics is working with the Return to Sport Committee and all Physical Education Heads to determine return to competition dates, schedules, and necessary facility rentals.

  • Basketball: Practices to begin immediately. Games to resume Feb. 22, 2022
  • Hockey: Practices to begin immediately. Games to resume Feb. 28, 2022
  • Water-polo: Tentative start date to be determined

More information will be released as it becomes available.

Vaccinations

To follow provincial guidance, HWDSB will not require proof of vaccination for high-contact sport unless it is required by the facility where the sport occurs (e.g., City of Hamilton facilities). HPHS has withdrawn its recommendation that students participating in high-contact sports be vaccinated.

Masking

Masks must be worn while on school premises, including change rooms, but may be removed for active participation in sport. All athletes on the bench and coaches present must always wear masks. Only players who are actively participating in sport may temporarily remove masks.

Spectators

No spectators will be permitted at any HWDSB regular season game. Limited spectators will be permitted at playoff games for all sports. We are following the process from the fall and will continue to review throughout the upcoming months.
