Summer Co-op

Continuing Education’s Summer Co-op program allows current secondary and adult students to earn two Co-op credits during the summer.  All Summer Co-op placements delivered through HWDSB must be within the boundaries of HWDSB and during day time hours.

STEP 1 – COMPLETE YOUR APPLICATION: 
All students 16 and over have a opportunity to apply for Summer Co-op by clicking the online application form below:

HWDSB Secondary students can apply now in XELLO (choose “Extra Credit “DCO3O1SS24” – you will also be contacted to complete the required 2024 Summer Co-op Application Form after April 1st)

Public SUMMER CO-OP APPLICATION starts on April 1. 

Deadline to apply – April 30, 2024 at 11:59 p.m.

STEPS 2 and 3 – PRE-PLACEMENT CLASSES: May 9, 16, 23, 30, June 6 & 13
To prepare for their summer co-op placements, all students must attend the mandatory co-op preplacement classes at Hill Park from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on May 9, 16, 23, 30, June 6 & 13. The 7th class, June 20th is optional.  Course Pre-placement course content will be active and available MAY 9 in the HWDSB HUB – https://students.hwdsb.on.ca

STEP 4 – SEARCH for PLACEMENT:  May through June 14th
Search for a placement using the following guidelines:

  •  Search the HWDSB Summer Co-op job board on MTEL (will be discussed at Pre-placement sessions)
  •  Apply to potential employers/volunteer opportunities either from the job board or you can source you own contacts.
  •  All placements must be within the boundaries of the HWDSB school district and during day time hours.
  •  Ideally you should have a placement secured by June 14th (see STEP 6)

STEP 5 – FINISH PRE-PLACEMENT: By June 13th
Make certain all the pre-placement course assignments are complete before the due dates, your co-op teacher will assist you with options if it is not complete.

STEP 6 – SECURE PLACEMENT: by June 14th
Once you secure a placement complete the online form with your placement details, by clinking the link to the right: 2024 Placement Confirmation Form

STEP 7 – FIRST DAY at CO-OP on JULY 2 (IF Co-op Ready)
      OR     CHECK-IN Day at Hill Park (IF NOT Co-op Ready) JULY 2

  • All co-op teachers will be at Hill Park from 9:00am to 2:00pm to address the needs of students who are not CO-OP READY, i.e. they do not have the required WEA forms, OR have not completed the pre-placement course, OR do not have a secured placement, OR do not have access to MTEL (coop software management tool).

STEP 8 – ATTEND PLACEMENT: JULY 2 to AUGUST 2
The student expectation are listed below:

  • Attend placement daily for 6.5 hours per day
  • Complete daily log sheets (using MTEL the co-op management software)
  • A mid-term (reports will be provided between July 8-12) and a final assignment will be given
  • Co-op teacher will conduct up to 3 to workplace visits.

STEP 9 – Earn Credits: AUGUST 2 Session Complete 

Providing all course expectations have been met students will earn 2 credits. Continuing Education HWDSB will send marks to applicable schools electronically.

Students are limited to choose ONE Summer Credit program each year.
