The first ever IPC acute malnutrition analysis of Haiti found that nearly 277,000 children aged 6 to 59 months are facing or expected to face acute malnutrition between December 2023 and November 2024, including 125,000 children who are severely malnourished. 

Of the 10 departments and municipalities that were included in the analysis, IPC AMN Phase 4 (Critical) was observed in Commune of Croix de Bouquets. The municipalities of Delmas, Cabaret and Fonds Verrettes were classified in IPC AMN Phase 3 (Serious), while 1 department and 21 municipalities were classified in IPC AMN Phase 2 (Alert). 

In the projection period of June to November 2024, the nutritional situation will experience a very marked deterioration with the Commune of Croix de Bouquets remaining in a Critical situation (IPC AMN Phase 4) as well as 8 municipalities (Caracol, Carice, Quanaminthe, Bainet, Belle Anse, Jacmel, La Vallée and Cité Soleil) and 1 Department (Artibonite) which will switch from from Alert (IPC AMN Phase 2) to Serious (IPC AMN Phase 3).

The major contributing factor to the acute malnutrition situation is the consequences of the security crisis on the nutritional situation throughout the country, along with recurrent epidemics of cholera, very high prevalence of child morbidity, poor quality of food intake as well as bad IYCF practices (in particular AME), bad hygienic conditions and low coverage of access to drinking water. Moreover, the food insecurity remains very high due to the combined effects of insecurity and climate shocks and the economic crisis. 

• Immediately strengthen the coverage and quality of treatment for acute malnutrition to urgently reduce the number of children and pregnant and breastfeeding women suffering from acute malnutrition in all 10 departments of Haiti
• Prevent and manage cases of cholera and ensure nutrition-cholera integration to reduce mortality
• Revitalize prevention actions and treatment of diseases such as malaria, ARI and diarrhea across the country 
• Increase coverage of acute malnutrition care, especially in areas where health institutions are closed, through alternative methods of offering services (mobile clinics, assembly station, ASCP and volunteers.)
• Strengthen the promotion of optimal IYCF practices (early initiation of breastfeeding, exclusive breastfeeding, dietary diversification and promotion of the consumption of local foods rich in micronutrients)
• Provide emergency food assistance to individuals and households in food insecure areas while integrating adequate protection programs that take into account the essential needs of children under 5 years old and pregnant and breastfeeding women.
• Further promote the multisectoral response linked to the provision of quality basic social services (Water, Hygiene and Sanitation (WASH), food, health, social protection, etc.) IAAn to protect vulnerable populations and respond to their needs basic needs.
