Division hoping for more communication with city on school bus transportation agreement

Lethbridge School Division is seeking additional dialogue with the City of Lethbridge in relation to a 50-year school bus transportation agreement that has served the purpose of getting students to and from school in a safe, efficient and effective manner.
The cost-neutral partnership has allowed our division to maintain a balanced transportation budget and avoid charging parents a transportation fee for students living 2.4 kilometres or more from their resident school.
Provincial education funding given to school divisions each year has always covered the costs of the service with payments made to the City of Lethbridge by the school divisions. The City of Lethbridge informs the school divisions of costs, including overhead costs such as facility, and the funds are transferred to the city.
As such, the service has not been a cost burden to the City of Lethbridge taxpayers all these years, nor has it been a cost to families with children riding the bus.
Should this partnership come to an end before the 2020/2021 school year, our school division will likely have only one option – to seek out a third-party vendor for bus service. Should a for-profit company be selected to deliver school bus service for 2020/2021, school bus transportation fees would likely be a reality for local families.
If you have a question or require any clarification about the school bus transportation agreement, please contact Lethbridge School Division Superintendent Cheryl Gilmore at cheryl.gilmore@lethsd.ab.ca or Associate Superintendent Christine Lee at Christine.lee@lethsd.ab.ca.
