There's a lot going on in AI, but here's something you should pay attention to. There's been a breakthrough in our understanding of the biological world and drug discovery - AlphaFold3 is a new AI model developed by Google DeepMind and Isomorphic Labs and it can now accurately predict the structures and interactions of nearly all of life’s molecules including proteins, DNA, RNA, ligands and more. Last night, I met Frances Haugen, a former Facebook / Meta employee-turned-whistleblower. She showed me how to block a very popular children's channel from my YouTube feed. I didn't want that content in my suggested videos and I'd clicked around a few times to block it but hadn't resolved the issue. I'd been sharing my observations on the differences between children's content created under different business models, e.g., Sesame Street vs. Cocomelon. Children's content designed for a click-economy or an attention-economy is bigger, brighter, and very compelling. Too compelling. Coupled with recommender systems and engaging storylines, toddlers literally cannot look away. Young kids just listening to the same nursery rhymes and stories can still appreciate the less vivid and real world they live in.
