According to the Global Report On Food Crisis, in 2023, over 281 million people worldwide faced acute food insecurity, marking a rise from pre-pandemic levels. Despite marginal improvements in some areas, the number of individuals in dire need increased by 24 million since 2022. Conflicts, economic shocks, and weather extremes continue to worsen these alarming trends. As we face these challenges, it's imperative to prioritize sustainable solutions and increase support for vulnerable communities. Meet Safiyo, a resilient mother who faced unimaginable challenges. Forced to flee their village in #Somalia because of a long-term drought, Safiyo and her family sought refuge in a faraway displacement camp. With few income opportunities available at the camp, the family could often only eat once a day. Soon after, Ali, Safiyo's eight-month-old child, became ill with fever, cough and loss of appetite. Seeking assistance, Safiyo turned to a medical center in the camp operated by Action Against Hunger and supported by Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada through the Humanitarian Coalition | Coalition Humanitaire. There, Ali received life-saving care, and Safiyo learned new feeding practices to help her take on a proactive role in her family's health. Meet Dr. Salma Mahayu 🩺, who leads a dedicated team of doctors and nurses at the Kiomboi Therapeutic Feeding Unit in Tanzania. Together, she and her colleagues provide treatment for children with severe malnutrition and empower families with knowledge about the signs and symptoms of malnutrition so that they can get their children treated sooner. “I am happy we can save lives, change the lives of children, and raise awareness about what malnutrition is, its causes, and its treatment,” says Dr. Salma. Over the past year, 8.2 million people have been displaced by the conflict in Sudan. More than 6.5 million people have been forced to move within Sudan, and around 2 million have fled to neighbouring countries. In South Sudan alone, an estimated 2,100 people arrive every day from Sudan. Today marks the one-year anniversary of the conflict in Sudan, which has triggered one of the world's largest humanitarian crises. ▶️Over 18 million people face hunger. ▶️2.9 million children are experiencing malnutrition. ▶️ 8.2 million people have been displaced. “Most of the people in transit are single mothers with children. Every single day, they don’t know how they will get food, water and shelter. We are trying to help, but while people continue to arrive in South Sudan, the funding is not,” warned Sulaiman Ken Sesay, Country Director of Action Against Hunger in South Sudan.
