Brent Toderian is a top national and global thought-leader on cities, and an acclaimed, award-winning practitioner with 32+ years of exceptional experience in city planning, transportation, urban design and complex urban change-management. Brent assists cities, states, agencies & progressive developers in creative and responsible city-building around the world. His work is transformative and game-changing. He has advised many global cities and city-regions, including Oslo, Helsinki, Copenhagen, Groningen NL, Reykjavík, Sydney, Brisbane, Auckland, Medellin and many North American cities.
Brent's establishment of TODERIAN UrbanWORKS (TUW) in 2012 followed 6 years of significant achievement as Vancouver Canada’s Chief City Planner (2006-2012). He earned his reputation as a hands-on visionary and city-changer, overseeing all aspects of city-building, including visioning, policy, plan-making, architecture + design approvals.
Brent was Manager of Centre City Planning + Design, & Chief Subdivision/Neighbourhood Planner in Calgary, where he pioneered innovative approaches to visioning, design review, special initiatives, & the creation of the award-winning Centre City Plan.
His career started with 9 years as a leading Ontario-based city planning + design consultant, with award-winning projects from Toronto to Yellowknife.
A passionate & diverse practitioner, Brent was founding President of the Council for Canadian Urbanism (CanU) for almost 10 years; a regular columnist on "City-Making" with CBC Radio in Canada; a contributing writer with Fast Company and many other publications; and a leading voice in many global organizations related to cities. He is a highly sought-after international practitioner, writer, speaker & teacher on issues of advanced urbanism. He was twice voted one of the “100 most influential urbanists of all time” by Planetizen in 2017 & 2023.
