As policymakers in the United States and Europe continue to explore reforms to their competition policy rules to respond to the surge in digital economic and consumer activity, there is increasing focus on competition policy reform in Canada. This includes a commitment by the federal government to review the Competition Act. To help further this critical conversation, the Future of Business Centre Fellow John Pecman released "Toughening Canada’s Competitiveness" earlier this month. His report addresses likely areas of reform to the Competition Act in the upcoming review and includes his nine recommendations to strengthen Canada’s competition law and our competitiveness on the global stage. How did Canadian businesses do in Q1 2024? According to our analysis of Statistics Canada | Statistique Canada's quarterly Survey on Business Conditions, businesses are proceeding cautiously as economic confidence shows a slight improvement. Our Business Data Lab has just released a new report analyzing responses from 15,000 Canadian businesses, covering their key obstacles, their expectations for the future, to their views on emerging issues. The report also introduces the new Business Expectations Index (BEI), a tool for business owners, economists, market watchers and policymakers to gain insights across more than 70 different business concepts, offering a near-term outlook for Canadian businesses. Here's what you need to know ⤵ ➡ Business sentiment in Canada remains weak in Q1 2024, despite some improvement from the previous quarter. ➡ #Quebec and #AtlanticCanada show stronger sentiment, while #Ontario and #BritishColumbia lag behind. ➡ Rising concerns about insufficient consumer demand are reported, amidst slowing economic growth. ➡ Despite inflation falling back into the #BankofCanada’s target range, 25% of companies expect to raise prices next quarter. ➡ Modest employment growth is expected, with ongoing challenges in sectors like accommodation, food services, construction, and healthcare. ➡ Indigenous-owned businesses are notably optimistic, while businesses owned by immigrants are more pessimistic. Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting the launch of Visa Canada's Spending Momentum Index (SMI). This innovative tool offers a new way to gauge the health of consumer spending across Canada and provides a unique view of global spending momentum. Given its expertise in using payments data, the Business Data Lab (BDL) believes Canadian businesses and chambers of commerce will find the SMI useful to compare Canada’s spending momentum to other countries and investigate spending health across categories or 250 Canadian cities. Our Vice President and Deputy Leader of Government Relations, Robin Guy, joined UPS' Carolyn Kim in iPolitics to detail concerns with CBSA's CARM program, which is putting economic growth at risk by placing an unnecessary burden on Canadian business - particularly SMEs. #canada #cdnecon #cdnpoli
In a time of high interest rates, slow economic growth, and market uncertainties, every business opportunity counts. Canadian small businesses need a simplified and easy-to-navigate customs regime that greenlights legitimate goods across North America’s border in order to stay competitive. Carolyn Kim and I teamed up in iPolitics to discuss how CBSA's Government's Assessment and Revenue Management System (CARM) is putting economic growth at risk. https://lnkd.in/g4DgpNzm
