Carolyn Bertozzi (1966) is an American chemist and Nobel laureate, known for her wide-ranging work spanning both chemistry and biology. She coined the term "bioorthogonal chemistry" for chemical reactions compatible with living systems. Her recent efforts include synthesis of chemical tools to study cell surface sugars called glycans and how they affect diseases such as cancer, inflammation, and viral infections like COVID-19. At Stanford University, she holds the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professorship in the School of Humanities and Sciences. Bertozzi is also an Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) and is the former director of the Molecular Foundry, a nanoscience research center at Berkeley Lab Laboratory. Here are some key areas where her work has made significant impacts: 1. Bioorthogonal Chemistry: Bertozzi's pioneering work in bioorthogonal chemistry has allowed scientists to label and visualize molecules inside living cells and organisms without disrupting their natural functions. This approach has become a powerful tool in biological research, enabling the study of biomolecules in their native environments. 2. Glycoscience: Bertozzi has made significant contributions to our understanding of glycoscience, the study of the structure, biosynthesis, and biology of saccharides (sugar chains) that are ubiquitous in biological systems. Her research has shed light on how changes in cell surface glycans are involved in various diseases, including cancer and infectious diseases. 3. Therapeutics and Diagnostics: Leveraging her research in bioorthogonal chemistry and glycoscience, Bertozzi has developed new methodologies for targeting diseased cells. This includes the creation of novel therapeutic agents that can home in on specific glycan structures present on cancer cells, offering new strategies for cancer diagnosis and therapy. 4. Chemical Tools for Biology: Beyond her contributions to bioorthogonal chemistry and glycoscience, Bertozzi has been instrumental in developing an array of chemical tools that facilitate the study of biological processes in unprecedented detail. Answering a Scientific Question In my Immunology class, the students read and present a primary research paper. Given that they are graduate students, a lot of my work is training them in the 'how' rather than the 'what': how would I go about answering this question, that arose from that reading. The question: why does IgM polymerize to hexamers (as opposed to pentamers) in the absence of the J chain? Here's the excerpt of the email I sent, on the process: 1. Googled - these days searching for something is far better than exhaustive PubMed searches, since the latter isn't as broad as Google searches: "IgM J Chain hexamers vs. pentamers" 2. Read and reviewed abstracts of over 10 papers. Found Ronald Corley at Boston University was the senior author on most of those papers.  3. Went back and reviewed the reference in the class mechanism paper - found they did reference his 1992 paper. 4. Researched Ron Corley on Pubmed, and lowered year dates from 1990-2010, which is the likely timeline where his lab intensely worked on IgM. 5. Found papers in the 1990s, especially a good review on the need for the ER in late-stage assembly of the J chain. All papers attached below. 6. Went thru all the papers - got my five reasonings on why pentamers vs hexamers as they relate to J chain synthesis.  7. As a near final resort, if I'm unclear, I would actually reach out to Dr. Corley at BU, introduce myself, and genuinely ask a clarifying question or two. Granted for this, students are always hesitant to ask professors but I would do it if the class needed, on your behalf. Here's the caveat I stated in the email: "Notice I'm not expanding on #6 - that's for you to do. I'd be happy to take extra time outside of class to expand on this process if needed. This process, trying to find the answer yourself, is your most valuable asset. However, you may be just learning of high-level science, process, primary research paper analysis for the first time in this class. So the expectation isn't for you to easily do what we scientists do routinely, given our background." While the above may be focused on science, the process is the same of many tough questions we get in science and business. The idea is to start generally, and focus down on key aspects of the research. That part is heavily dependent on formal education, training and experience. The way a non-scientist approaches a process is wholly different than how scientists approach it. Same for business problems. Enjoy! PS: I also state in the first lecture, that I'm not an expert on the whole of Immunology. No one is. But I can help direct you in finding the answers. With the caveat that not all questions will have specific answers, as is the scientific process. Not everything is known to the exact way we'd like. Simlarily observe the halogens free radicals binding at ovarian cell estrogen receptor and disturbance of ovarian cell signaling at the DNA site in the occurrence of ovarian cancer. Observe cell signaling at pituitary gland and neuron cell DNA snd neurological disorder. Instruments HPLC, IR, serium sample PH etc . Compare CDC measurement scale of organo halide limitation of chemicals in human body.
