BAA wrap: cross country championships a muddy meet

The weather is getting colder and that means the Bluewater Athletic Association’s fall season is about to heat up. Some of the fall slate of sports are heading down the home stretch, while the cross-country runners are already competing for championships and preparing for regional and provincial competitions.

CROSS COUNTRY

The St. Mary’s Mustangs won the overall title at the 2022 Bluewater Athletic Association cross-country championship held during a rain-filled and muddy Thursday afternoon at the Grey Sauble Conservation Authority headquarters in Owen Sound. Kincardine District Secondary School won top honours for female athletes while St. Mary’s secured the most points for male athletes. The Central Western Ontario Secondary Schools Association cross-country championship is set for Thursday, Oct. 27, at Ainsdale Golf Course near Kincardine. All of the BAA athletes are eligible to compete at the CWOSSA championship, as it’s an open championship with up to 200 competitors in each race division. Ava Moric looks to repeat as OFSAA champion this year, this time in the junior circuit, while Cohen Martin finished fifth in the senior boys’ race at OFSAA in 2021.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

The cream is rising to the top in the volleyball scene as Owen Sound District Secondary School (OSDSS), St. Mary’s and Bruce Peninsula are separating themselves in the North Division while Saugeen and Sacred Heart have got off to a blazing start down south. The OSDSS Wolves and Bruce Peninsula Panthers are both 5-1 now while the Mustangs trail right behind at 4-1. Georgian Bay (2-4), Peninsula Shores (0-4) and Grey Highlands (0-5) round out the North Division circuit. Meanwhile, Saugeen is 7-1 and Sacred Heart remains undefeated at 6-0. John Diefenbaker (2-4), Kincardine (2-6) and Walkerton (1-7) remain in the hunt.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Two undefeated squads remain in the BAA senior girls basketball circuit with the Georgian Bay Thunder a perfect 4-0 and the Sacred Heart Crusaders 5-0 to start the season. The Thunder are tops in the North Division while the OSDSS Wolves (3-1) try to keep pace. The St. Mary’s Mustangs and Grey Highlands Lions (0-5) round out the bracket. In the South Division, it’s a battle of the titans between the Sacred Heart Crusaders (5-0) and the Walkerton Riverhawks (4-1). The Kincardine Knights (2-3), John Diefenbaker (1-4) and Saugeen (0-4) are still in the fight.

SENIOR FOOTBALL

The St. Mary’s Mustangs travelled to Port Elgin Thursday for a much-anticipated game between two undefeated teams and came away with a 16-0 shutout over the Saugeen Royals. With the win, the seven-time defending champion Mustangs improve to 4-0 and have outscored teams 122-7 in those contests. The Mustangs also featured this week on the Canadian Football Chat (canadafootballchat.com) Top-25 small school rankings slotting in at No. 23. The Royals suffered their first loss of the year and are now 3-1 while the OSDSS Wolves topped Grey Highlands 10-0 Friday for their first win of the season. The Grey Highlands Lions fall to 0-4, yet remain the only team to score on the Mustangs.
