Undergraduate

  • I am currently accepting applications from interested students to work with me as part of the Undergraduate Student Summer Research Fellowship (USSRF) at Queen’s (Political Studies deadline: March 15, 2023).

  • I am happy to supervise Honours Theses relating to the representation of marginalized groups, anti-LGBTQ+ prejudice, and LGBTQ+ political attitudes and behaviour in Canadian politics.

Master’s

  • I am generally happy to supervise Master’s Research Projects (MRP) relating to parties, elections, and representation in Canadian politics, particularly those with an emphasis on identity and inequality. I am also willing to supervise comparative projects relating to LGBTQ+ politics.

  • For 2022-2023, I am at capacity for MRP supervision.

  • Our Department’s MA application deadline is generally in late January. (It was January 22, 2023 for students applying to start in Fall 2023.)

  • I strongly encourage MA applicants to Queen’s to apply for the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s (usual deadline: December 1) the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) for Master’s programs (usual deadline: around our graduate application deadline).

  • I am happy to discuss the MA with potential applicants before the application deadline.

PhD

  • I am willing to co-supervise PhD students who have interests that are closely related to mine (Canadian political parties, the representation of marginalized groups in Canada, and LGBTQ+ political behaviour in Canada). In our Department, it is usually advisable to secure an agreement from a potential supervisor to take you on as a PhD student before you apply. Since I am not taking on students as a sole supervisor, potential applicants can contact me, and then we can discuss potential co-supervisors.

  • Our Department’s PhD application deadline is generally in late January. (It was January 22, 2023 for students applying to start in Fall 2023.)

  • I strongly encourage PhD applicants to Queen’s to apply for the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Canada Graduate Scholarships – Doctoral and the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS). The SSHRC deadline is generally in early Fall, and I encourage interested students to contact me as soon as possible so that I can support their applications. I would encourage you to apply for OGS before you apply to Queen’s. In both cases, please list that you have applied for these scholarships in your application.

  • I strongly recommend that anyone applying to the PhD in Political Studies at Queen’s submit a separate one-page single-spaced PDF to the Department that includes a more detailed statement of purpose than the one allowed through the online application form.

  • I am happy to work with postdoctoral fellows on topics that overlap with my research interests.

  • I generally expect that postdoctoral fellows who work with me have their own research agenda and a co-authored research agenda with me.

  • In addition to external postdoctoral fellowship opportunities, such as SSHRC or Banting, you may wish to be aware of the Skelton-Clark Postdoctoral Fellowship, the Buchanan Postdoctoral Fellowship in Canadian Democracy, and the Postdoctoral Fund through the Queen’s VP Research, all of which are through Queen’s funding sources.
