Transportation Driver

Volunteer opportunity conditions:   

  • Location: in-person 
  • Regions / or cities: Volunteer roles are based in one of these cities applicants are asked to reside in one of these cities or be willing to drive to the work location.  
    • Western ON: Sarnia, Point Edward 
    • Northern ON: Dryden, Kenora, North Bay, Sault Ste. Marie (Wawa, White River), Sudbury, Thunder Bay, Iroquois Falls, Cochrane, Kapuskasing, Timmins and Hearst 
    • Central ON: Barrie, Midland, Collingwood/Wasaga Beach, Midland/Penetang, Muskoka, Innisfil. 
  • Minimum age: 18 years and older.  
  • Minimum volunteer hours /period: Minimum 6 month commitment. Days of operation are Monday to Friday. There is flexibility with time commitment, and we can work to accommodate your availability.  Common shifts are once per week for a minimum of 4 hours. 
  • Specific requirements: Enhanced Police Information Check, Full Driver's licence (Ontario G Licence) and a satisfactory driving record are required. 
  • The driver will be responsible to come to the Canadian Red Cross Branch to submit and/or receive necessary paperwork and to complete training. 
  • Must follow all safety protocols in place and wear proper personal protection equipment (which will be provided) if required.

The Transportation Drives team is looking for volunteers to be part of their mission. Transportation Drivers make a significant impact to those in our community that may have no other means of transportation for important appointments and activities.  As a volunteer in this program, you will assist our clients in many ways; they will benefit from being able to live independently, alleviating social isolation, and their overall better well-being. In preparation for being successful in this role, all volunteers will be asked to successfully complete an online learning path offered to you free of charge by the CRC. 

As a volunteer in this role, you will: 

  • Drive clients to designated destinations 
  • Assist clients to and from vehicle 
  • Work with Program Coordinator to ensure that the exterior and interior of vehicles are clean and safe 
  • Abide by all policies, procedures and practices including but not limited to vehicle circle checks, mileage and route documentation 
  • Report any concerns of clients with deteriorating health and/or other needs to the Program Coordinator 
  • Complete all required training and attend on-going additional training sessions as needed 
  • Report to the Transportation Coordinator for all scheduling and availability 
  • Priority Assistance to Transition Home (PATH): Transitioning Patients from Hospital to home with the assistance of a Transitional Care Worker

  • Strong defensive driving skills 
  • Ability to drive in various weather conditions 
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills 
  • High level of patience, compassion and empathy in a non-judgemental environment 
  • Good working knowledge of the area 
  • Fluency in written and spoken English is required. 
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision 
  • Considered an asset but not required: 
    • Ability to be on-call and accept ‘last-minute’ ride requests 
    • Fluency in other languages such as French
