2023, Biotechnology AdvancesCitation Excerpt :The LCB can be biochemically processed by way of a cellulase-mediated biorefinery that has been identified as a desirable approach for the cascading conversion into biofuels, biochemicals, and biomaterials (Nguyen et al., 2017). Normally, this process involves two essential steps, i.e., pre-treatment to render the biomass more accessible to cellulases, and enzymatic hydrolysis to afford a sufficient fermentable sugar stream for microbial fermentation (Barbosa et al., 2020; Singh et al., 2019). Among which, enzymatic hydrolysis is an extremely crucial step, and the big challenge is how to cost-effectively release fermentable sugars from the pre-treated substrates.
