RCPS Newsletter
Update - September 1, 2023
Welcome to the 2023-2024 school year! We are very excited to reconnect with everyone and to welcome all of our new students and families on Tuesday, September 5, 2023. This year will be filled with opportunities for your child to grow in their learning, to explore new experiences and to cultivate new and existing friendships.
RCPS has been undergoing renovations throughout the summer and we are excited for the fresh, new look of all our classroom spaces. Our office and gym spaces are still undergoing finishing touches so are not yet accessible but, we continue to make student safety, success and well-being a priority.
Educators, Support Staff and Custodians are busy planning and preparing for the arrival of students to make the transition to school as seamless as possible, to meet the needs of all of our students and to continue to inspire our students to excel in learning, succeed in life and enrich our community. A special shout out to our Custodial Staff who have worked tirelessly this summer to make our building safe and ready for all.
Our amazing Office Administrator, Kendra Dillabough is happy to welcome all families and answer any of your school related questions, or point you in the right direction to get the help you need. You will be able to find the temporary office space inside the front doors and to the right. We thank Elder Melody Crowe and Alderville Students Services for the generous and temporary use of their space and remain respectful and appreciative as we occupy it, while we await the move into the main office.
You will find valuable information within this new newsletter format that will help you and your child with the transition back to school.
We look forward to meeting everyone at the Open House on September 19 from 5:30 to 7:00pm. Be sure to mark your calendar.
Here's to another fabulous school year!
Thank you, Miigwech, Merci.
Yours in Education Partnership,
Mary Jane Corradetti
Principal, Roseneath Centennial P.S.
What's Happening at RCPS
School Bell Times, Office Hours, Arrival and Dismissal
Office Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:00 - 4:00
8:55 - Arrival
10:50 - 11:30 - First Nutrition Break
1:10 - 1:50 - Second Nutrition Break
3:30 - Dismissal
While we recognize that there are days which make it difficult to arrive to school on time, we ask that families make every effort to arrive prior to the 9:10 entry bell to ensure that students are not missing valuable instructional time at school.
All students will dismiss at the 3:30 pm bell and will exit through their designated doors. Students who take a bus home will exit their designated doors and walk to the bussing area. Kindergarten students who are bussed will remain with an educator and taken to their bus.
Parents dropping off and waiting to pick up students are asked to drop off students at the gate and wait outside of the fenced area at the end of the day.
Please do not drop students off prior to the 8:55 arrival time as there is not available supervision prior to 8:55.
Families who are wishing to sign students out before the end of the school day must come into the school and sign students out at the office. All students arriving late to school must check in at the office before proceeding to class.
In addition, please ensure that you and your child are clear as to the plan after school to avoid calls to the office to change plans last minute, as the school will be beginning procedures for exiting safely.
If you are seeking Before or After School care, please contact Danielle.Roberts@nrt.ymca.ca
First Day of School
All students in Kindergarten Year 2 and Gr. 1-8 will begin school on September 5th.
Our school day begins at 9:10 and ends at 3:30. Year 1 Kindergarten students will follow a gradual entry plan that has been outlined by your child's teacher and ECE.
Teachers will be available to meet their students at 9:10 on the yard in the following locations:
Grade SK - 3 - fenced yard at front of school
Grades 4-8 - back yard behind school
Bussed students: A staff member will supervise students in the bussing area and will ensure that students make their way to their designated yard.
We will have staff visible and available to direct students from the bus and on the yard to their teachers and classrooms.
Snacks, Water and Boomerang Lunch
Please ensure you pack adequate snacks and lunch items for our two nutrition breaks. We will be practicing a Boomerang Lunch this year which means, it would be helpful for students to use reusable containers where possible and they will take home as much of their garbage as possible. This will cut down on the amount of garbage created by the school and help reduce our carbon footprint.
Please send your child with their own, labeled, water bottle to fill up throughout the day, as the water fountains are closed, but the water bottle filling stations are open.
If you are looking labels for your child, click below to see our fundraiser from Mabel's Labels.
Communication
We recognize the importance of regular communication with families. Along with this monthly RCPS Newsletter (which you are encouraged to revisit throughout the month), we will share ongoing and important information and updates via School Messenger, which will be emailed to families and will also be available on our School Website under School News.
In addition, all homeroom teachers will reach out and share with you their preferred method of communication (telephone, email, Edsby, Google Classroom). Please contact your child's teacher if you have any questions or concerns about your child's learning or well-being.
The Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board can be accessed by visiting the new Board website, where you will find a vast amount of information for you and your family. https://www.kprschools.ca/en/index.aspx
Personal Electronic Devices (Reg. ES-1.6.1)
'The Kawartha Pine RIdge District School Board acknowledges the potential for disruption to the instructional day, school operations, school and personal safety, and academic honesty represented by the unrestricted use of PEDs (laptops, netbooks, tablets, cellular phones, smartphones, portable audio players/recorders (iPods, MP3 players) handheld game consoles, photo and/or audio devices (cameras, camcorders)'
'Appropriate uses of PEDs in schools may include:
- when being used by teaching staff for instructional purposes;
- when, in consultation with the student and in the professional judgment of the classroom teacher, or principal or designate, it is being used by the student as an educational resource, support or aid for learning;
- when identified as an appropriate accommodation in student individual education plans (IEPs) or in the professional judgment of the classroom teacher, Special Education Resource Teacher (SERT), psychological specialist, speech pathologist or principal or designate;
- the principal or designate can authorize PED use on an individual basis when extenuating circumstances warrant the limited, time-specific use of a PED;
- the teacher can authorize the use of PEDs on an as-needs basis; '
Here at RCPS we recognize that many students have PEDs for many reasons. Personal devices are permitted to support learning in the classroom or for health/medical needs or for special needs, as determined in consultation with the classroom teacher, SERTs, administration and parents. They are to be used in class with staff invitation and permission only and otherwise turned off and away (teacher’s decision how this looks) when not in use for learning. PEDs are not permitted during nutrition breaks, in washrooms or on the school yard.
As always, our Administrative Assistant in the office and all of our staff are always available to assist students when they need to contact family or have a conflict or concern they need help with.
RCPS School Council
As we commence another inspiring school year, we would like to invite the adults of our school community to become involved with your school council. Your participation means you can directly help discover new and exciting ways to contribute to the education of students in your school. Education is a partnership involving adult family members, parents, guardians, students, teachers, principals, school boards, government, and the community. Your involvement in council gives you the opportunity to strengthen that partnership. Your participation does make a difference!
Our primary goal is to partner with the school to engage families to be involved in their student's education experience. Involvement means:
* communicating
* participating in school events
* volunteering
* influencing decision-making
* understanding the curriculum
* And of course, as a part of school council, we initiate fundraising plans to financially enhance our student's education experience.
Commitment – What is involved?
You can become involved in school council with any level of commitment that you choose. Council meetings are 5-6 times a school year and are open for everyone to attend. You can become a voting member; hold an executive role; fundraise; and have a say in purchases made for the school that enhance our student experiences.
This is one way to keep in touch with what is happening at our school, be involved, understand the structure of the education system and feel like you have a voice in your student’s education experience.
Nominations for Council Executive will be posted soon with our first Council Meeting of the 2023/24 school year set for Monday, September 25 at 6:00 pm. Save the date to attend in the school library.
