Nov 24 - Feed Your Future Virtual Stem Workshops
Empowering Young Females to Pursue Careers in Agriculture and STEM!
Women make up less than 25% of people employed in STEM careers. According to Statistics Canada, 34% of Canadians with a STEM degree are women and they make up only 23% of Canadians working in science and technology. The gender gaps are particularly high in some of the fastest-growing and highest-paid jobs of the future, like computer science and engineering.
Giving young women equal opportunities to pursue — and thrive in — STEM careers in agriculture helps narrow the gender pay gap, enhances economic security, ensures a diverse and talented workforce and a strong and sustainable agriculture industry.
Ag for Life's Feed Your Future initiative aims to promote girls in science, technology, engineering, and math — showcasing ways to advance in education, opportunities for networking, professional development, mentorship and collaboration.
Students may register individually or teachers may register groups of students.

Minecraft Design Challenge: Build A School
Minecraft: Education Edition Design Challenge – Build a School!
In this year's challenge, students are tasked to create a prototype for the new Sherwood Heights replacement school and build a scaled model in Minecraft. Students will work through the design process to create a prototype of the school that incorporates Alberta Infrastructure Standards, Energy & Sustainability Criteria, and Landscaping Guidelines. Throughout the challenge students will be virtually connected to community members that work on designing and building schools in their careers such as architects, landscapers, sustainability specialists, and inclusivity designers.
Once students have created their prototype, they will build their scaled design in a replica of the Sherwood Heights neighbourhood within a custom Minecraft world. For our French Immersion classes, the custom Minecraft world also comes in a French version for you to use!
To support teachers with integrating this opportunity into their classrooms, documentation has been created that outlines the specific K-12 curricular connections. Within this documentation you can view each grade and subject to see the outcomes the challenge can be linked to.
Teachers and/or students DO NOT need to be an expert in Minecraft to participate! There will be a high level of support (both asynchronously and synchronously) provided and it is a great opportunity to learn something new!
Teachers - for more information and registration click here.
Students - check with your school to see how they will be participating!
