Faculty-Led Program

Faculty-led program is a short-term academic course that allows you to earn academic credits while experiencing new culture in order to further develop your global skills.  A SLC faculty teaches the course and leads the trip to an oversea location to implement the experiential learning component of the course.

Students will have scheduled classes and pre-departure sessions on SLC campus before and after the trip. Some of these classes may be virtual to connect with oversea partners.

Costs and Funding

When you apply to a faculty-led program, your application will automatically be evaluated for funding eligibility. If you are accepted into the program, you will be awarded the applicable funding to cover all or part of the program cost. 

The faculty-led programs are supported by 3 funding sources:

Application Process

Step 1: Fill out the Global Learning Application Form and get the approval by your Program Coordinator.

Step 2: Get the following documents ready before you apply:

  1. A Personal Statement (Max 300 words) including both:
  • How the course you are applying to fits with your academic and career aspiration
  • How you will apply global/intercultural skills in your chosen field

  1. Signed Global Learning Application Form 
  2. If you are an Indigenous student, please provide one of the following if you have:
  • Status card
  • Band Membership card
  • Red card (Haudenosaunee Identification Card)
  • Certificate of Aboriginal Status
  • Membership card from the provincial affiliate of the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples
  • Citizenship card issued by a Métis National Council governing member (for example, Métis Nation of Ontario, Métis Nation of Saskatchewan)
  • Land claim beneficiary card

Step 3: Fill out the Faculty-led Program Application Form.

It normally will take about 3-5 weeks for you to receive your application result.

Important Notice

*Credits for the GENE courses:

  1. All enrolled full-time students are eligible to apply.
  2. Students enrolled in a diploma program can use the GSO course to fulfill GEN-Ed requirements.
  3. Students enrolled in a degree or graduate certificate program, do not require a general education course. Due to this, the GSO course will not be counted as a requirement for graduation or in your final program GPA calculation.
  4. it is important to clarify with your Program Coordinator whether this GSO course will or will not serve as a substitute for elective courses within your academic program; and how it may impact the date of your graduation if you have to alter the sequence of your courses or placement.
  5. It’s the student’s responsibility to make sure that this course fits within your academic schedule to ensure you are able to fully participate in this course and fulfill your other academic obligations.

Fees:

You will be required to pay an additional tuition fee (ancillary fee if applicable) if:

  1. You already have a full course load in that semester while you enroll in this GSO as an overload.
  2. You enroll in this GSO course in a semester that your program does not run. For example, your program does not have a spring semester, but you choose to enroll in a GSO course in the spring semester.
  3. If your program does not have a GEN-Ed requirement, but you choose to enroll in a GSO course.

It is the student's responsibility to seek clarification pertaining to tuition fees. Please consult with the Registrar’s office directly at Enrolment@sl.on.ca. Please indicate your student ID and program name in your email to the Registrar’s office.

GENE 7000 Entrepreneurial Thinking in a Global Context

      • Location: Virtual, In-Person and Ireland
      • Partner: Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest
      • Course dates: Fall semester (September – December 2024)
      • Travel date: October 20 - November 1, 2024 (subject to change)

      • Program fee: CAD $4,300. Students who are accepted into this program will receive a bursary of up to $1,800 to offset the costs. 
      • Academic credits: 3 credits* (please check the credits session above for more details)
      • Application due date: April 12, 2024
      • Application decision: April 24, 2024
      • Program fee payment deadline: Your seat will be reserved once the full program fee is paid by May 16, 2024.
      • Withdrawal and refund deadline: June 15, 2024. If you withdraw before this deadline, you will receive a refund minus the non-refundable deposit of $250. If you withdraw after the deadline, there is no refund. This is due to the booking of flights and accommodations with service providers.

 GENE 115 Creating a Sustainable Society

  • Location: Virtual, In-Person, and in Costa Rica
      • Partner: Tecnologico de Costa Rica (TEC)
      • Course dates: Winter 2024 (February 1- May 10, 2024)
      • Travel date: April 21 –May 4, 2024 (subject to change)

  • Shared homestay or guest houses (2 or more people sharing at a time) 
  • Limited Wifi access in some locations 
  • Moderate to difficult hiking conditions on multiple days 
  • High temperature and humidity 
  • Limited accommodation for accessibility 

GENE 1006 One Health/NURS 1002 Cross-Cultural Connections


  • Location: Virtual, In-Person in Tanzania
  • Partner: Pamoja Tunaweza Women's Centre
  • Course dates: Spring semester (May – June 2024, pre-departure sessions will start in March 2024)
  • Travel date: May 20 – 31, 2024 (subject to change)

To be eligible, you need to be:

  • Currently enrolled at SLC as a student in an academic program with a minimum GPA of 2.0 as per SLC Study Abroad Policy. (See Policy Centre on your SLC.ME portal)
  • A Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or an international student.

If you are a Canadian student and belong to one of the following priority groups, you will be given first consideration.  

  • Indigenous student 
  • Low-income student  
  • Student with disability 

All students, Canadian and International, will be evaluated based on the merits of their application. In particular: 

  • How the global learning opportunity fits with their academic and career aspiration
  • How they will apply global/intercultural skills in their field

Yes, you will pay the program fee to confirm your acceptance and secure your seat. Your application will be evaluated against the bursary criteria, and you will be awarded up to $1800.

If you are accepted into the program, you will be awarded the applicable funding to cover all or part of the program cost. 

The faculty-led programs are supported by 3 funding sources:

SLC’s Global Learning Bursary, funded by

  • Tuition Set-Aside Fund
  • International Fund provided by GuardMe Insurance

Included:

  • Airfare, partial ground transportation, and accommodation.
  • Travel and health insurance
  • All learning activity fees as per course requirements

Not included:

  • Personal spending
  • Personal cell phone plans/costs
  • Activities outside of the course requirement
  • Meals
  • Vaccinations
  • Visa application
  • Passport application

 

For low-income students, you may request additional bursary to cover costs such as passport application, meals, visa applications or childcare for the time you are travelling out of the country. Please submit your tax assessment from prior year and the most current bank statement at the time of your application.

The travel portion may be scheduled during a break week, and/or regularly scheduled academic weeks at SLC. It is the student’s responsibility to inform the instructors of your planned absence and make proper arrangements to meet the course requirements and deliverables.

The Global Learning Centre team may issue a letter of support if needed.

In general, the financial support you receive will be reported on your T4A for income tax purposes. Information on OSAP for the 2022-23 academic year has not been released yet but this funding is not likely to affect your OSAP entitlement. As information becomes available, we will update it here and/or update applicants with current information.
