FORT WILLIAM FIRST NATION — Members of Fort William First Nation will go to the polls on May 27 to elect a new chief and council.

At the close of nominations, two candidates had filed papers to run for chief, and both are women.

Former chief Georjann Morriseau and three-term council member Michelle Solomon are seeking the top job.

There is no shortage of candidates for the 12-member council, as there are 61 names on the ballot.

They include the former chief, Peter Collins, who stepped down last September to serve as CEO of a company formed by eight First Nations that have partnered with Hydro One to build the Waasigan Transmission Project.

The First Nation has not had a chief since then.

The election was originally scheduled to be conducted on April 7, but was postponed after a procedural error and the resignation of the electoral officer.
