Parents have been urged not to get their children tested if they return from school with a runny nose or sniffles.

Testing centres in Scotland have been overwhelmed by a sharp rise in families reporting for Covid-19 assessments after youngsters developed cold-like symptoms.

Jason Leitch, Scotland’s national clinical director, yesterday responded by sending a message directly to parents and guardians.

In the email, he said that children with mild cold-like symptoms did not need to be tested or to isolate and could safely continue their education in most cases.
