UKM Global Webinar Series - The Importance of Associations in the Internationalization Strategies of Universities

The webinar aims at sharing insights of Malaysian and Japanese HEIs on their active participations in international associations. International Associations has played such an important role in bringing universities from across the world together. Universities become members of associations with the aim to improve networking and establish stronger partnerships with other member universities. Many universities have benefitted through the multilateral nature of these associations that allows universities to have access to other universities through these networks. Among established international associations within the region include Asean Universities Network (AUN) which also includes an AUN+3 component, University Mobility of Asia Pacific (UMAP), The Association of Pacific Rim Universities, The Exchanges for Engineers and Entrepreneurs (GE4) to name a few. The basis of many international associations is towards building bridges between universities, addressing core issues affecting universities across the world and providing a platform for universities to discuss pertaining matters. This session will showcase the sharing of the experiences of universities in Malaysia and Japan on their participations with international associations and how this form of partnership has brought their internationalization efforts to greater heights. It also aims at exploring how and what kind of support associations provide during the pandemic period and dealing with a period of uncertainty.

Professor Dr. Yong Zulina Zubairi currently as the Associate Vice-Chancellor (Global Engagement), she actively leads and participates in the strategic planning drive towards innovation in HE. With a vision of a global university impacting the world, the office drives global cooperation in teaching activities, research and community engagements with strategic partners and networks across the globe. This means engaging faculty, students and staff in research collaborations, student and staff exchanges and global collaborative learning to increase the global knowledge, skills and values to become impactful global citizens. As a central point of coordination, the office disseminates and collects university’s global footprints in activities, partnerships and mobility data with the campus community and stakeholders. As a Professor in Statistics, she has been actively publishing numerous articles in refereed journals, supervised a number of both postgraduate students, secured both national and international grants, organized seminars, actively support industrial networks such as Bank Negara Malaysia, Department of Statistics Malaya to promote statistical knowledge and literacy to academics and community at large. Her areas of research include circular and medical statistics, graduate employability, internationalization and STEM education. She is also passionate in community work and as a Vice-President of the Women University Association, an NGO based on campus, they have been actively running wide-ranging projects involving female staff, female students and alumni of the university. Also, as an alumnus of the Commonwealth Fellowship, she actively participated on the events and engagements to assist new scholars and homecoming events.

Professor Dr. Nor Haniza Sarmin is a Professor of Mathematics at the Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Johor Bahru, Johor. Prof Niza joined UTM International as the Director (Global Education and Student Experience) from April 2016 – March 2018 and later the Associate Director (Student Services and Global Education Experience) from April 2018 – August 2019. She currently holds the portfolio as Associate Director (Global Strategy and Engagement) starting from 15 August 2019 until 31 December 2021. Prof Niza received her BSc (Hons), Master and PhD in Mathematics from State University of New York (now known as Binghamton University), Binghamton, New York, USA. Her specialization of research is in Group Theory, Graph Theory, Formal Language Theory, Splicing Systems, and Their Applications. She has published over 500 research papers in national and international journals and proceedings, primarily on group theory and splicing systems. She has also supervised and graduated 37 PhD students, 25 masters students and 83 undergraduate students under her supervision. Prof Niza has secured more than 20 research grants as the Leader and over 25 as a collaborator. In the area of internationalization, Prof Niza has delivered numerous talks/papers in many Higher Educational Institutions (HEI) seminars, conferences and exhibitions which include NAFSA, EAIE, Eurie, APAIE, APSSA, SHARE, AIMS, QS-Apple, Going Global and AIEC.

Dr. Takao Inamori is an Associate Professor at, Institute of Global Human Resource Development, Okayama University. He earned his Bachelor's and Master's degree in International Agricultural Development from Tokyo University of Agriculture, and his second Master's degree in Project Planning and Management from the University of Bradford, UK. In 2010, he obtained his PhD in Organisational Behaviour from the University of Bradford. He was then a visiting researcher at the University from 2010 to 2013. His research interests include International Agricultural Development and Organisational Behaviour, and he has worked as an aid worker in Asia, Latin America and Africa, mainly in the field of agricultural development. At Okayama University, he has been working as a coordinator of international exchange programs since 2015 to activate the outbound programs. He also engages in the" Sakura Science Exchange Program" funded by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and "Study in Japan Global Network Project in ASEAN", funded by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) to increase the number of international students from ASEAN. The Six National Universities Network (SUN)/ International Education & Research System (SixERS) was established in 2013 to promote human resources development to lead globalisation and advance academic research. Sun/SixERS is formed by Chiba University, Niigata University, Kanazawa University, Okayama University, Nagasaki University and Kumamoto University, originally founded as a medical school approx.150 years ago. Dr. Inamori is a core member of the Sun/SixERS and an energetic promoter of the activity.

Moderator

Dr. Fernando Palacio is a Program-Specific Senior Lecturer at iSO-KU. His main responsibilities relate to the design and development of university-wide policy on internationalization, promotion of internal synergies among the different organizations within the University, and support for iSO-KU’s efforts to maintain an inclusive university. He is in charge of overseeing the University’s activities in Southeast Asia. His responsibilities also relate to the promotion of University Social Responsibility.
