Today, Canadian rockers Metric have returned with a new single "All Comes Crashing" and news of their eighth studio album Formentera, their first since 2018's Art of Doubt. I didn't really think I needed a romantic, arena-rock anthem for the end times, but now that we have one I guess that's changed.

"All Comes Crashing" opens with a tease of laser-beam synths and engine-revving guitars. These suspenseful embellishments quiet when vocalist Emily Haines comes in with nods to the current overstimulating and unpredictable times. "When push it comes to shove / We do not fall out of love / We double down / We do not fade," she cooly asserts before the enrapturing chorus hits. "For all I know this might be my last night / That's how it goes / There's no one I would rather be lying beside," she sings about love as a balm for catastrophic times. Then there's some serotonin-boosting guitar work that captures the butterfly thrill of love and resolute determination to stay together.

“Not everyone has a conventional life with conventional relationships,” Haines said. “‘All Comes Crashing’ is a love song that goes beyond romantic love, it’s an expression of solidarity with whoever it is you would want to have beside you in the event of catastrophe. It might be your best friend, it might be your blood brother or your dog. The song is dedicated to those you consider your family, whatever that looks like for you.”

The track also comes with a video that features a lot of flashing neon light and closeups of the band members. At times, the phrase "This Is What Happened" flashes across the screen, which, the bands claims, have been words to live by when dealing with these past few years.
