The Ford government says its updated plans for Ontario Place come after feedback from the City of Toronto, Indigenous communities, stakeholders and community members.
It features about 50-acres of parks, public and green spaces, additional food and beverage options, waterfront programming, activity and play zones, Indigenous elements and features throughout, as well as proposed Indigenous educational and programming opportunities.
In addition, the province promises a new, modernized Ontario Science Centre, while the Cinesphere and pod complex would be preserved and upgraded.
Meanwhile, the private Therme spa redesigned proposal would see more accessible park and green space on the West Island to nearly 16-acres, expansion of access to the waterfront and reduction of the volume of its buildings by 25%.
A controversial element would see the removal of a ”significant amount of trees and vegetation.”
But the province says for every tree removed, ”approximately twice as many trees, native to the area would be planted.
The Official Opposition is still not impressed.
Just like carving up the Greenbelt, this is a real disservice to our environment and a real disservice to future generations of Ontarians,” said NDP MPP Chris Glover (Spadina-Fort York).
