Kindergarten

Welcome to Kindergarten, an important building block in the foundation of your child's education.
Children who will turn five by December 31, 2024 can register to start school in September 2024. Register now and don’t miss your school’s Welcome to Kindergarten orientation day – a great way for kids to get familiar with their new teachers and school!
See registration information below.

“Welcome to K” half-day for all new Kindergarten students

The “Welcome to K” half-day, for all new Kindergarten students who will be starting school in September 2024, will occur on the following days for each Education Centre:

• Fredericton Education Centre schools – Wednesday, May 22, 2024

• Woodstock Education Centre schools – Thursday, May 23, 2024

• Oromocto Education Centre Schools – Friday, May 24, 2024

It is expected that this half-day for new Kindergarten students will not affect the teaching day for children already attending Kindergarten, and they are to attend school on these selected days. Should you have any questions, please contact Anna Marie Hayes at (506) 453-5698 or by e-mail at annamarie.hayes@nbed.nb.ca

Eligibility

Your child can attend kindergarten if they turn five years old by December 31 in the same year that they would start Kindergarten. For instance, if your child’s fifth birthday is December 31, 2024, they can start kindergarten in September 2024.

All immunizations must be in order prior to starting school in September 2024.

Which school will my child go to?

Students are assigned to schools in their catchment area. To find the schools closest to your family’s home, use the school finder. In some instances, students can attend a school outside of their catchment by requesting an intra-district school placement.

How to register

There are two registration processes: one for Canadian Students and one for Newcomer Students. Please review the criteria within each process to find out which is the right process for your child.

If you need help with registration contact the district’s Early Years Family Navigator.

Registration for Canadian Students

Your child is considered a Canadian Student if they meet the following criteria:

Canadian student criteria
  • Your child was born in Canada
  • The language spoken at home is English or French
  • or:
  • Your child is a Canadian citizen returning to New Brunswick from another country

If your child meets the above criteria, they can be registered by following the steps below.

Step 1: Pre-register through the EECD Parent Portal

The Parent Portal allows EECD (Education and Early Childhood Development) to uniquely identify your child and provide targeted services throughout their time in the New Brunswick public school system. Follow the instructions on the EECD Parent Portal to create your account and apply for pre-registration.

Please note that you will need your child’s New Brunswick Medicare Card, or New Brunswick Education Number to complete the EECD pre-registration online.

If you cannot register online, for whatever reason, please reach out to your school. Use the school finder to locate your local school.

Step 2: Wait to be contacted by your child’s school

You will be contacted by your child’s school after you complete the pre-registration. If you do not hear from your child’s school, contact the school.

As you wait to hear from your child’s school, learn about topics like busing, school cancellation, and French Second Language on the Current Students page.

Optional: Complete the Early Years Developmental Assessment (EYE-DA) consent forms in advance

You may choose to complete the Early Years Developmental Assessment (EYE-DA) consent forms in advance of your school appointment. Simply download and complete the forms below and forward copies to your school by email. If you choose to not complete the EYE-DA consent forms in advance, they will be made available to you during your appointment with your school.
