Dear Readers,

There is a saying in German, “April macht was er will”, meaning “April does what he wants”, but it rhymes in German. The saying is referring to the changing weather during that month. On April 2, when we celebrated my birthday, the weather was nice in Edmonton with a temperature of plus 20 degrees Celsius, but a few days later it snowed again, and the Canada Geese were honking loudly, complaining that some of the lakes in Mill Woods and the Meadows were still frozen. Alberta weather has the reputation that it can change in a blink of an eye, and – unlike in Germany where I grew up – there are only two seasons in Canada, a long winter and a few months of summer. As soon as the snow is melted, the trees are starting to sprout, and spring is short, but the colorful “Indian Summer” in the fall can be quite nice.

Anyway, enough about the weather. The political forecast tells us that the Alberta NDP will pick a new leader soon. Five serious candidates are competing for the job, and the race is quite interesting since Calgary’s former mayor Naheed Nenshi has thrown his hat into the ring, but the front runner is not always the winner.
