Search the Collections

Before you begin

Before you begin searching our collections, it is important to realize that the record descriptions available in our database represent a small but growing portion of our collection. Most of our collection is accessible only through in-house finding aids and card catalogues, although that will change as we add more and more descriptions to the online database. For more information on researching in person at the Archives, click on the links to the left. Since the database is a work in progress, please check back often.

If you are interested in getting copies of a record (see our Policy on Copying) or coming to the Archives to view your search results, be sure to write down the database ID numbertitledate, and format from the long description so the record can be easily retrieved.

For more information about our collections and archival descriptions please refer to our content and historical language advisory.

Content and Historical Language Advisory

Some archival records in the collections held by the Simcoe County Archives include historical content that is offensive. For example, they may include racist or sexist language. Such content reflects the period when the records were created and the viewpoints and attitudes of their creators.

It is the goal of the Simcoe County Archives to maximize the accessibility of our collections to researchers, while minimizing the presence of harmful language in our archival descriptions. Archives staff are working to add contextual information to descriptions of records that include offensive historical language and contents. We are also reviewing and updating the language used in our descriptions database and finding aids to reflect current best practices. This is an ongoing process.

If you encounter records or descriptions in our collections that include language or contents that you think Simcoe County Archives should review, please contact us at archives@simcoe.ca.
